How Do I Know If I Need Residential Treatment?

We recommend inpatient treatment for adults who want to remove addiction and substance abuse from their lives, once and for all, and would find a therapeutic environment in a calm, private setting beneficial to their recovery.

Our admissions staff can help you determine if yourself or a loved one can benefit from residential treatment for addiction at Pathways Recovery Center. The signs and symptoms of addiction can vary depending on the specific substance of abuse and severity of the addiction, but they are always damaging to both the addict and their loved ones.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic brain disorder marked by compulsive behavior to stimulate the reward centers of the brain despite adverse consequences. Addiction manifested by substance abuse is characterized by continued use of drugs and/or alcohol regardless of the damage it is causing to the user, their livelihood, and the lives of their loved ones. Because the brain is exposed to the drug of choice continuously, it becomes dependent on it. The brain can no longer produce the reward chemicals the user is craving without the drug. This dependency results in changes to the brain systems related to motivation, memory, and reward. The brain will attempt to balance itself by reducing the reaction to rewarding chemicals, thus creating the need for greater amounts of the drug of choice to acheive the same effect. This is how tolerance and dependency further develop. An individual suffering from addiction will eventually need to use the drug just to feel somewhat normal. Tolerance and dependency result in intense cravings that soon take precendence over anything else in the individual’s life. Jobs, family, and values soon take a backseat to the addiction and the individual may experience the loss of those things and still continue to use. They may be unable to engage in normal activities without use, have lost interest in things they once cared about, including themselves.

Characterized by relapsing, addiction must be addressed by intensive treatment and continual aftercare. With the right treatment, social support systems, and recovery education, even the most chronic cases of addiction can be managed. The American Medical Association and American Society of Addiction Medicine define addiction as a progressive disease, caused by biological, psychological, and social factors. At Pathways Recovery Center, we use Biopsychosocial assessments to address each one of these factors and their unique impact on each individual. We believe that treating addiction means treating the whole person by recognizing and mitigating their unique obstacles, triggers, and thought processes. We want to help each client develop a clear and extensive understanding of their thought systems, behavior patterns, and motivating factors while they learn new ways of thinking, new coping mechanisms, and techniques for handling distress. With these new mechanisms in place our clients are able to recognize the signs of relapse and utilize their new recovery supports to overcome addiction.
